Infrastructure solution

Networking

The wired and wireless network your security systems and everyday computing both depend on — switching, cabling, power over Ethernet and links between equipment positions.

What the system is for

Cameras drop offline, remote viewing fails and systems become unreliable when the underlying network is not designed for the load.

Cameras, access terminals and intercoms are only as dependable as the network underneath them. This work covers that layer, and the general connectivity a site needs alongside it.

  • Cameras, recorders and access devices connected on infrastructure sized for them
  • Power over Ethernet where devices are designed to take it
  • Tidy, labelled cabling and a sensible equipment position
  • Wireless links where a cable route is impractical
  • Room to add devices later without rebuilding what exists

Typical premises

  • Offices
  • Warehouses
  • Schools
  • Hotels
  • Commercial buildings

What a network installation usually includes

Most sites need the same building blocks. Sizing follows the device count, the distances and where equipment can physically live.

  • Switching and PoE

Switches that connect devices and, where suitable, power them over the same cable.

  • Routing and internet

The connection to your internet service and the equipment that shares it around the site.

  • Structured cabling

Cable runs, containment and termination planned within workable distances.

  • Wireless links

Point-to-point links between buildings or positions where cabling is not practical.

  • Fibre for long runs

Where a link exceeds sensible copper distance, fibre carries it between positions.

  • Power and protection

Supplies, backup provision and containment at the equipment position.

Switch capacity, power budgets and link performance depend on the equipment selected and the site. We confirm those figures against the chosen models rather than stating them up front.

System design considerations

  • Device count

How many cameras, terminals, access points and computers must connect determines the switching required.

  • Powered devices

Which devices draw power over the cable, and how much, shapes both switch choice and power provision.

  • Cable routes and distances

Copper runs have practical distance limits; the building layout decides where equipment positions land.

  • Equipment position

The switch and recorder need somewhere ventilated, secure and reachable — often the hardest thing to find.

  • Bandwidth and load

Video, backups and general use share the same infrastructure, so the mix is worth discussing early.

  • Separating traffic

Keeping cameras and access devices apart from general use can be sensible, where the chosen equipment allows it.

  • Remote access

Viewing or managing systems off-site depends on the internet connection and on being configured carefully.

  • Wireless where cabling fails

Line of sight, distance and mounting points decide whether a wireless link is a realistic answer.

  • Future expansion

Spare ports, spare cable capacity and labelling make the next addition simple instead of disruptive.
