Keys are copied, lost and shared, and there is no record of who entered a restricted area or when staff arrived.

Access control replaces shared keys with credentials that can be issued, changed and withdrawn. The doors, the people and the rules are agreed before any reader or lock is chosen.

What an access control system usually includes

The parts below appear in most installations. Which readers, locks and door hardware suit your site is decided after the doors themselves have been looked at.

Readers and terminals
Biometric, card or keypad devices at the doors you choose to control.
Credentials
Fingerprint, card or fob, chosen for how staff, tenants or visitors will actually use the door.
Electric locking
Magnetic locks, strikes or gate hardware matched to the door type and frame.
Exit and egress devices
Exit buttons and emergency release arrangements so people can always leave.
Power and backup
Dedicated supplies and standby batteries so doors behave predictably during outages.
Network connection
Cabling or switching where terminals are managed or monitored from a computer.

System design considerations

Which doors are controlled
Main entrances, server rooms, stores and gates rarely need the same level of control. Listing them first keeps the system proportionate.
Credential type
Fingerprint, card or code each suit different users and conditions — dusty hands, gloves, visitors and high traffic all influence the choice.
Door hardware compatibility
Timber, steel, aluminium and glass doors accept different locking devices. The existing frame often decides the hardware.
Entry and exit logic
How people exit, how deliveries are handled and whether both directions are read all change the device count.
Emergency egress
Escape routes must stay usable. Release arrangements are agreed with you and with whoever manages the building.
Power and continuity
What a door should do during a power failure is a decision, not a default, and it affects the power design.
User administration
Someone has to add and remove users. We agree who does that and provide guidance at handover.
Attendance requirements
If attendance records are needed, the terminal positions and reading points are planned for that as well as for security.
Integration
Access control often works alongside intercoms, CCTV or gate automation — planning them together avoids rework.
